šŸ‘” Getting your first Dev job

Today I have 3 articles for you. Yes, a lot of reading, but they are worth it. I have a design, a technical and a career article:

  1. Choosing the right colors

I love design, but I’m not good at it, and I’m fascinated with color selection šŸŽØ , but I get confused by it. This article talks about how you can use a mathematical approach to color selection (the 60:30:10 rule), as long as you have at least a primary color you want to use.

BTW, as I went through this article, they mention about ColorHub which is great theme selection tool with CSS export capabilities.

  1. Intro to Domain Driven Design

It was hard for me to select a resource that could talk about DDD (Domain Driven Design) without being overwhelming. The link I have selected is not perfect for that, but it is a good start.

DDD is an approach to software development where the code is reflecting the real-world as closely as possible so that we have a unifying language between tech and business people.

Why my interest in DDD? Because we have started implementing DDD about 2 months ago in a project that I’m working on my fulltime job.

Why this is interesting for you? Because by using it you will become a better developer.

⚠ Warning: ⚠ This is not a walk-in-the-park type of reading. At times it can be a bit complex and hard to understand. So no worries if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

If you want to go even deeper, I will leave you with Martin Fowler.

  1. Getting the first dev job

This is a great article written in a very informal way, describing Julia’s experience on getting her first dev job after shifting careers in her 30s.

I am impressed by how practical and down-to-earth she describes the process she went through.

A great takeaway from the article: ā€œDon’t focus on code alone, focus on how to solve problemsā€. She also mentions to focus on soft and business skills quite a lot.

Very valuable if you are looking to get your first job.

My personal update:

  • Fan Expo was great and I saw 91 years young šŸš€ Captain Kirk. My daughter went nuts when she saw a guy from Stranger Things.

  • Thinking about how to reignite my work with šŸŒ‰ Brridge.com - This is a project I started almost 3 years ago helping new devs getting experience and their first job.

  • I’m going to enjoy this long weekend before kids are back to school and I’m back to teaching šŸ« .

Cheers, hasta la vista, and bye!
